Talking Time:
Rumor has it that millennials can't afford to buy houses because we're wasting all our money buying avocado toast. If you're one of these people, let me help.
Restaurant vs. Cooking at Home Cost:
Bartavelle in Berkeley sells one avocado toast for $9.75. If you take it to go, that comes out to $10.70 with tax. Their ingredients include: Brokaw ranch avocados, olive oil, lemon, celtic sea salt and marash pepper on acme bread pain au levain.
Cooking at Home: I'm going to be making 3 avocado toasts today and my cost will come out to $1/avocado toast. My ingredients include: 2 small avocados, olive oil, lemon, kosher salt, red pepper flakes, and Trader Joe's everything but the bagel seasoning blend on acme bread pain au levain.
Cost Per Serving
- Restaurant: $10 (I'll round down to be nice)
- Home: $1
Shopping Tips:
If you bake your own bread, use it! If you don't, then find a good bakery and buy your bread there. I buy my bread at Acme Bread. A loaf of pain au levain costs $5.50 and I'm able to get 10 or more slices. Slice the bread, put it in your freezer, and take out to toast when you're ready to eat. It tastes so much better than grocery store bread--they make the bread the day of, they don't use any preservatives, and it's worth it.
Ingredients (Makes 3 toasts):
2 small avocados
1/2 a small lemon
Kosher salt
Olive Oil
Red Pepper Flakes
Trader Joe's Everything But the Bagel seasoning blend
Bread
Recipe:
- Slice your avocados, scoop them out and put them in a bowl.
- Sprinkle with a little bit of salt (if you're using the bagel seasoning blend, don't use too much salt bc the blend has salt in it)
- Squeeze some lemon to coat the avocados
Avocados sprinkled with salt and coated with lemon juice
- Mash your avocados, salt, and lemon
All mashed up and ready to be spread on some toast
- Get your toasted bread and spread the avocado mixture. Sprinkle some red pepper flakes, the Trader Joe's bagel seasoning blend, and drizzle with some olive oil.
The finished product
Eat some avocado toast at home and save that money for a down payment for a house. You're welcome.
